Greenhouse Office

Archigardener Greenhouse Office
Project completed by Archigardener (Jul – Oct 2023)

This greenhouse redefines the home office as a harmonious integration of architectural and ecological systems. This backyard structure is a minimal intervention with maximum impact, fostering a symbiotic microclimate where humans and plants thrive together through sustainable materials and technologies.

The structure is constructed primarily from reclaimed historic building materials, paying homage to architectural heritage while minimizing environmental impact. Its facade, clad in intricately shaded polycarbonate, is meticulously oriented to harness solar energy, facilitating passive heating in winter and natural cooling in summer. This lightweight, transparent structure balances insulation and openness, creating a luminous workspace that feels both expansive and intimate.

In addition to passive systems, this greenhouse leverages technologies borrowed from agriculture to maintain an ideal microclimate for both occupants and plants:

  • Aluminium Woven Insulating Shade Cloth: Strategically deployed, this reflective textile regulates solar heat gain while preserving natural light, optimizing thermal performance, while also retaining heat at night.
  • Automatic Spray and Drip Irrigation Systems: These precision systems deliver tailored hydration to the plant ecosystem, enhancing humidity and minimizing water use.
  • Heat-Sensitive Wax-Tube Pneumatic Ventilation Flap: A passive mechanism designed for industrial greenhouses that autonomously opens in response to temperature fluctuations.
  • Solar-Powered Ventilation Fan: A low-energy solution ensuring consistent air circulation for a fresh indoor environment.
  • Low-Power Tube Heaters: Providing supplemental warmth during colder months, these heaters maintain comfort with minimal energy consumption.

A delightful sky-view greenhouse shower further elevates humidity levels, complementing the irrigation systems to nurture the plant ecosystem. The dense vegetation has now established a self-regulating microclimate, stabilizing temperature and humidity to create an optimal environment for both plants and architectural creativity.

This Greenhouse Office is a testament to biophilic design, crafting an inviting and rejuvenating workspace that seamlessly blends human needs with ecological vitality. Bathed in natural light and enveloped by lush greenery, this serene sanctuary uplifts the spirit and sharpens focus. The carefully curated microclimate—maintained by passive and active systems—ensures comfort for both occupants and plants, fostering a sense of tranquility and connection to nature. The gentle rustle of leaves, the soft humidity from the sky-view shower, and the clean, oxygen-rich air create an inspiring atmosphere, making this an exceptional space for ideation, design work, and well-being.
