Luxury Living in the Tropics

I recently had the opportunity to explore the latest completed work by critically acclaimed Singapore architecture firm, WOHA: Goodwood Residence. The architects have taken the generic condominium archetype and imbued it with a specific climactic and cultural identity, perfectly suited for the tropical region of Southeast Asia.
Circulation through the development is done via a formal -yet rustic- colonnade of rough hewn stone and a pergola roof casting dramatic shadows. The atmosphere is distinctly tropical, as strategically placed openings frame views of frangipani trees, reflection pools, and garden vistas.

The facade of the towers is a direct expression of Singapore’s sweltering tropical heat. The vertical circulation cores are clad with an innovative green wall system made from expanded steel mesh, oriented perpendicular to the building edge- shading the building, while maintaining views.

The units are shielded by a specially designed operable louvre system, which provides shade and privacy, while also shielding away unsightly back of house areas and air-conditioning condenser units. These louvres are operable to allow full view from the unit as desired.

Along with standard balconies, some units are fitted with cabanas that project into the development’s lush gardens. It’s an interesting concept, and i’m very curious to see how they are used by the residents.

The penthouse units (each costing tens of millions of dollars) are spectacular, with expansive private rooftop terraces and dramatic perfectly-detailed (see the interface of wood to steel?) spiral staircases leading to the equally massive units themselves.

This luxury condo residence has been brilliantly conceived as a stunning example of residential architecture that is not only luxurious, but sensitive to cultural identity.
