Building in Harmony with Nature: A Sustainable Shelter in Borneo’s Rainforest
Ngapuh Nest, Borneo, Malaysia
Project completed by Archigardener (Jan 2024)
In the heart of Borneo’s lush rainforest, Archigardener and local partners Ngapuh have collaborated to craft a shelter that protects the delicate ecosystem while providing a model for sustainable architecture. This project is a testament to the vision that human structures can coexist with nature, preserving biodiversity and inspiring global change.

A Foundation That Treads Lightly
Instead of concrete, we used ground screws for the foundation—a low-impact, reusable solution that minimizes environmental disruption. Installed in minutes, these screws eliminate the carbon-heavy footprint of concrete and allow the forest floor to thrive undisturbed.

Raised to Respect Nature
The shelter is elevated above the ground, ensuring the vibrant habitat of animals, insects, and plants continues seamlessly below. This raised design acts as a guardian, preserving the rainforest’s rich biodiversity while providing a functional space.

Sustainable Materials, Local Roots
We sourced local hardwood timbers using sustainable harvesting practices like seromah, processed on-site to reduce transportation emissions. Leftover wood planks from other projects were repurposed, further sequestering carbon and supporting the local community.

A Canopy-Inspired Roof
The shelter’s nest-like roof, inspired by the rainforest canopy, provides dappled shade and blends into the surroundings. Lightweight polycarbonate sheeting, easier to handle than traditional metal, wards off tropical rains while maintaining views of the towering trees above.

A Beacon of Eco-Conscious Design
Every element of this shelter reflects a commitment to sustainability—from the low-tech construction techniques to the careful selection of materials provided by nature. The result is a structure that not only serves as a shelter but also harmonizes with the rainforest, celebrating its ecosystems.

Inspiring a Global Vision
This project showcases Borneo’s rainforest as a treasure of sustainable coexistence. By balancing human needs with ecological preservation, Archigardener and Ngapuh offer a prototype for architecture that treads lightly on the Earth, inviting others to reimagine how we build in harmony with nature.
